Why is Break So Short?

It really isn't that short when you think about it, 3 weeks is a long time. However, I'm still working on reading only my third book, out of so many that I still want to read! I haven't watched all of the movies on my list of movies to watch, and I haven't gotten to see everyone that I want to see. So clearly, 3 weeks is a little too short. Especially when it comes right after the roughest quarter I've had at UCLA academically. I'm just not ready to jump into battle again in just one week. I haven't missed having an alarm clock wake me up early, the dining hall food that pretty much tastes the same to me now, or the insane amounts of exams with their very confusing curves. Why does time fly by so fast, when I need more of it?

Looking Through Old Photographs at 2:36 AM

I think I am naturally nocturnal and am only forced into "normal" sleep patterns by society. I mean why else is it so easy for me to stay up until 3 am, and why do I do my best work in the middle of the night? Sometimes I can't write at all unless I do it at nighttime. And, why else is it so difficult for me to get up in the mornings? Even when I go to sleep early, I still have trouble getting up for those 8 am classes (which I've learned to try to avoid from now on).
Anyway, in my sleepless daze I was looking through some of my old photography, and this shot really caught my eye. It was taken through a moving car window, which made it blur. I think I was just randomly snapping photos to pass the time in the car, and somehow got this shot which has a non-random quality to it. Simply put, I like it.

Cat Meets Fish

I've had my pet fish for over a year now. His name is Sushi, as named by my coworkers at google last summer, and he has been a trusty companion and friend. He lived at my work desk all summer last year, and even survived my freshman year of college with me at UCLA. Now that I'm home again for the summer, and I am not working at google, he has taken up residence at my house. Here, as everywhere, he is very popular. He has met my 4 dogs, and here he is meeting my cat. So far so good, no eating incidents with his fellow pets. Not that Sushi would eat them or anything, but I keep an eye on him nevertheless. =)

Angry Stork

Wouldn't want this stork to be in charge of bringing my baby. He definitely looks like he's plotting something.

Pennies Lab

I spent my Friday night analyzing ages of pennies for a statistics lab. Who really even cares about coins anymore? Or much less, about how old they are? Taking pictures of pennies is much more entertaining than analyzing them statistically.

Garden at the Getty

I went back to the Getty today =) Lots and lots of flower pictures, definitely more to come as I go through them.

Rorschach Flower

This one kind of looks like a Rorschach inkblot test, but on a flower. Maybe I've been reading my psychology textbook a little too much. =)

Serenity

Three midterms: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. And now it's done, there's sunshine outside, and I can finally relax, photograph the flowers outside, and enjoy the serenity.

Sprinkles Cupcakes

It's the most delicious cupcake place ever, and I'm lucky enough to have it here in LA. =D
My favorite are their red velvet cupcakes, complete with cream cheese frosting.

I Went to the Getty!

There were pretty buildings, and fountains, and funny looking trees:

I enjoyed the artwork, even though they would not let me take any pictures of DaVinci's work and my camera died by the time I got to the Impressionists [Not to self: make another trip to snap a shot of Monet's Irises.]

I got some snazzy looking pictures of cacti though (yes, they even have a cacti garden!):

Construction, construction, construction...

Our beautiful campus is being taken over by workers and cranes and bright orange cones. The dorms are surrounded by caution tape, and I am forced to take detours to get around. Expected date of completion? 2013, the year that I graduate.

Squirrels at UCLA

There are squirrels lounging in the sun, squirrels rummaging in the trashcans, and even squirrels posing for pictures here at UCLA.

As a side note, while I was looking up squirrel info, I ran across this UCLA Baby Squirrel Rescue. With such great public services, these little creatures sure have something to smile about.

Sunset on the Beach

It is breathtaking. Watching the sun set on the beach in Santa Monica is indescribably amazing. It is simply the daily disappearance of the sun below the horizon, yet it makes me appreciate life and gives me a feeling of peace in the universe.

I'm an insomniac

It is 4 am and I simply cannot fall asleep. It makes absolutely no sense, because I'm tired and want to sleep, and yet I was lying there and sleep just did not come. So naturally, I checked my facebook, then my email, then textsfromlastnight. This failed to put me to sleep. Then I was looking at the background on my computer, and it is a picture that I recently took. I really like it, and felt like it simply had to be added to my wonderful photo blog.
Then I got to thinking... plants don't sleep, do they? They just sort of sit there and photosynthesize all the time. And then I imagined being a plant, perhaps a big old redwood, just sitting there for decades and never sleeping. It seems so peaceful, yet at the same time very strange. I should stop thinking so much at four o'clock in the morning.

A peek at UCLA

The lamp post with a sign to Powell. The library where I have spent many days studying chemistry, until late into the night, cramming knowledge into my brain. It is very beautiful, and so meticulously quiet inside. Everyone around me always looks so intelligent that I am motivated to get work done. More brilliant photos of UCLA to come.
